WHAT TO EXPECT

You must be aware of and understand the potential risks associated with surgery. This will enable you to provide informed consent and make well-considered decisions about your procedure.

While serious complications are uncommon, it is crucial that you familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of potential complications to ensure early detection.

Normal Surgical Experience

Bruising and Swelling: Some swelling and bruising is expected after your surgery. It’s important to know that this may be uneven at first, but don’t worry, this is common and won’t affect your final results.

Following icing instructions and taking recommended supplements will help minimize these symptoms.

Pain: You can expect some mild to moderate discomfort after your surgery, which is completely normal. This usually subsides within 1-3 days. However, if your pain is severe and not relieved by Tylenol or the medication prescribed to you, please reach out to our office.

Numbness: It’s completely normal to experience temporary numbness around your incisions and the areas where the surgery was performed. This is because the sensory nerves near the skin’s surface need time to recover. Feeling should gradually return within a few months after your procedure.

Bleeding: It’s completely normal to experience minor bleeding or drainage from your incisions or surgical areas right after your procedure. However, if you notice excessive bleeding, or if your dressing becomes saturated with drainage and you experience significant swelling or pain, this could indicate a hematoma. If this happens, please contact our office immediately.

Nausea/Vomiting: Nausea can sometimes occur after surgery, particularly. in general anesthesia. To help avoid this, you will be prescribed Zofran or another antimedic to manage any post-procedure nausea.

Red/Itchy Incisions: As your incisions heal, it’s normal for them to change color, typically progressing from darker/red to flesh toned.. This is a natural part of the scarring process. To help your incisions heal faster and minimize scarring, we recommend using a scar gel and keeping incisions out of the sun. Keeping your incisions moisturized with the recommended products during the initial heal phase will also help reduce scarring and alleviate itching.

While serious complications are uncommon, it’s important to be aware of potential warning signs. If you experience any of the following symptoms, please contact our office or Dr. Truesdale immediately so we can assess and address the situation promptly.

Uncommon Complications:

Hematoma: In rare cases, a hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin) may develop. This can cause severe pain, swelling, and typically affects one side of the face/neck. While minor hematomas may resolve on their own, larger ones may require drainage or surgical intervention.

Infection: Signs of infection include fever, chills, sudden or excessive redness or swelling, pus-like drainage, and/or severe pain.

Lower Blepharoplasty Complications: Severe swelling, pain, or vision loss after a lower blepharoplasty could indicate a hematoma and require immediate medical attention. Please contact our office or Doctor Truesdale right away.

Though extremely rare, if you experience shortness of breath/difficulty breathing or shaking, you will require immediate assessment/ treatment. Please contact 911 or the office at 424-363-4112 immediately.

DEEP PLANE FACE & NECK LIFT

The True Test of Time: Over time, the effects of aging can lead to a loss of definition in the cheeks, jawline, neck, and a decrease in overall facial volume loss. The Deep Plane Face and Neck Lift in conjunction with our add-on procedures counteract these changes by repositioning facial tissues to restore a more youthful appearance.

Post-Operative Appointment: You will have several post-operative appointments. Day one after surgery, Dr. Truesdale and his team will check. your incisions, remove your dressings, and clean the area to ensure proper healing.

Icing: Apply ice packs for 20 minutes at a time, then remove for 20 minutes. Always use a cloth or towel as a barrier between the ice pack and your skin to protect your incisions and prevent burns. Do this frequency for the first week.

Post Operative Dressing: Your initial dressings will be removed during your first day post-surgery appointment and a new one will be reapplied for 1-2 days.

Suture Removal: Sutures will be removed 7-9 days post your surgical procedure.

Incision Care: Keeping your incisions clean and moist is crucial for optimal health. Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching the incision areas.

Drain Care: If you’re having a Deep Plane Face and Neck Lift procedure, bulb drains will typically be used to help you heal faster.

These drains stay in for 1-3 days and remove fluid from your face and neck. You’ll need to empty the drain into the toilet when the bulb is half full, then squeeze the bulb flat and close it to maintain suction.

The drains are stitched in behind your ears; to avoid pulling, keep them pinned to your shirt or use the lanyard provided. Showering is okay after 48 hours (72 hours if you’ve had a laser procedure) and also after drains are removed.

To care for your Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain, you need to:

  • Wash your hands with soap and water before touching the drain or the dressing.
  • Milk the tubing to help move clots and prevent blockage.
  • Empty the drain every 24hrs, so once a day at the same time. This way we will know how much fluid drained in a 24 hour period.
  • When you uncap the bulb and the bulb inflates, record the time and the amount of fluid that is in the bulb by estimating how many mLs are in the bulbs based on the numbers.
  • Empty the drain by pouring out the fluid. Squeeze the bulb and recap.
  • Secure the bulb inside your dressing or clothing.

Post Procedure Activities: Complications after a Deep Plane Face and Neck Lift are rare, though you may experience mild drainage bleeding from your incisions within the first two days. Take it easy during the initial two weeks and avoid any strenuous activity like bending, heavy lifting, or excercise to minimize swelling and pressure on your face. You should be able to resume your normal exercise routine after four weeks.

Key Points

  • Your initial facial dressing will be removed during your first post-op appointment
  • You can shower 48 hours after surgery, unless you had a laser procedure, in which case you should wait 72 hours. When showering, wash your hair carefully, avoiding the incision sites.
  • Starting 24 hours after surgery, clean your incisions twice daily (morning and night) with hydrogen peroxide applied using a Q-Tip.
Continue this cleaning routine for a week or until your sutures are removed.
  • After cleaning, apply Aquaphor ointment to keep the incisions moist and promote healing.

FAQ’s

How long until the incisions heal?

Everyone heals at a different rate. Incisions look worst around 2-6 weeks and continue to heal up to one year following your procedure.

Why do I have ripples or bumps along my incision lines?

Normal rippling or bumps are caused by swelling around the incisions and will improve as the swelling goes down. This is most common on the sides of the face.

Is the poking sensation a suture that is left behind?

Occasionally, you may feel a stitch poking out from your facelift and browlift incision. This is simply the tail end of a suture beneath the skin working its way out. It’s a harmless and will dissolve in 4-6 months.

Please let the office know if you still feel the suture after three months.

How long will the numbness, tightness, and tingling last?

It’s quite normal to experience numbness or tingling sensations after your procedure. This is usually temporary and typically resolves within a few months. The tightness comes from sutures under the skin and are holding your muscles in their “younger looking” position.

How long will the results last?

While the result of this procedure is permanent, it’s important to remember that your face will age naturally. However, the procedure significantly slows down the aging process, and most patients are satisfied with their results for 10-15 years.

When can I return to exercising?

Typically, 3-4 weeks after surgery. Light exercise like walking is acceptable the days after surgery and highly encouraged.

When can I wear sunscreen and makeup?

Both sunscreen and makeup should be worn no earlier than 9-10 days after your surgery. Makeup should not be put on any open wounds or healing incisions until closed.

Can I use scar gel?

Yes, we recommend a medical grade scar gel, which creates a silicone barrier over the incision line.

Why does my face look different on both sides during healing?

This is due to a combination of natural facial asymmetry and the fact that swelling may subside at different rates on each side. This unevenness is temporary and will typically even out as you continue to heal over the next 6 months to a year.

How much pain will I have?

Each patient is different, but typically pain is 3-4/10 and easily controlled with oral pain medication or Tylenol. Brow Lift patients may experience a headache for 1-2 days.

Should any other questions arise, please contact your Patient Care Coordinator.

LIP LIFT

As we age, the soft tissues of the face lengthen, affecting the appearance of the upper lip. It can start to look thinner, elongated, and less defined. A lip lift is designed to counteract these changes. By subtly shortening the upper lip and restoring its youthful proportions, this procedure can create a more balanced and revitalized facial appearance. The incision is strategically placed along the base of the nose, making it virtually invisible for a natural looking result.

Post Procedure Incision Care

  • Try to apply ice compresses to your lip for 20 minutes on and 1 hour off for the first week to reduce swelling and bruising. Icing is not necessary while sleeping.
  • Clean the incision with soap and water to clear crust.
  • Apply Aquaphor or Vaseline only to the incision at the base of the nose two times dally.
  • Take medications as directed
  • Do not put tension on your lips. Avoid big smiles, kissing, and excessive mouth movements and be very careful when brushing your teeth. It may be helpful to use a small toothbrush.
  • Sleep with your head elevated.
  • It is normal to feel stiff for the first month.

FAQ’s

How does a lip lift improve the appearance of the upper lip?

By removing a carefully measured portion of skin, the procedure subtly shortens the upper lip. This lifts the lip, creating a more youthful and balanced proportion between this lips and nose.

Am I a good candidate for a lip lift?

Good candidates typically have a long philtrum, thin upper lip, and desire a more visible upper lip.

What is the recovery like after a lip lift?

Recovery typically is quick, with most patients resuming normal activities within a week or two.

How long do the results last?

The results are considered permanent, however it’s important to remember the face will continue to age naturally.

Will there be a visible scar?

The incision is hidden in the natural crease under the nose, making the scar very inconspicuous for most people once healed.

Should any other questions arise, please contact your Patient Care Coordinator.

EYE RESTORATION

As we age, our eyelids can develop excess skin and lose volume, leading to a tired or aged appearance. Eyelid rejuvenation procedures can address these concerns, creating a more youthful and refreshed look.

Types of Eye Restoration

  • Upper Blepharoplasty: This procedure removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids, with the incision discreetly hidden within the natural eyelid crease.
  • Lower Blepharoplasty: This procedure addresses the under eye bags by repositioning excess fat. Dr. Truesdale uses a transconjunctival approach, placing the incision inside the eyelid for an invisible scar. In many cases, this is combined with a skin pinch and/or fat transfer for optimal results.
  • Skin Pinch Lower Blepharoplasty: This technique removes excess skin from the lower eyelids using an incision concealed within the natural lower eyelid crease.

What To Expect

  • Blurred vision: You may experience blurry vision for a day or two after your procedure.
  • Burning: It is common to have burning sensation in your eye area post procedure, to alleviate this you may place cold gauze/ice packs on the area for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off. Use a barrier such as paper towel to protect your skin when using ice.
  • Dry Eye: To help avoid dry eye, use eye drops 3-4 times per day.
  • Bruising and Swelling: Peak days for bruising and swelling are generally 2-4 days post-surgery. Expect swelling to resolve over weeks to months. Darkness can occur after lower blepharoplasty and will subside over several months.

FAQ’s

When will the incisions heal?

Incisions look the worst 2-6 weeks post surgery, however continues to heal up until a year. It is normal to have thickness in the upper eyelid incisions for the first 1-2 months. They soften over time. If you feel thickness, we recommend massaging the area. Please ask your PCC for instructions on this.

When can I wear eye makeup?

Patients are free to wear makeup 10 days after surgery.

Why is my vision blurry?

During your procedure a lubricating ointment is applied for the protection of your eyes.

When will I see my final results?

The initial results will be visible after the swelling and bruising subside. The final results may take several months to fully develop as the healing process continues.

Will eye restoration surgery change the shape of my eye?

No, the goal is to refresh and rejuvenate the eye area by addressing skin and fat.

Should any other questions arise, please contact your Patient Care Coordinator.

FAT TRANSFER

From around age 35, we experience a gradual and natural loss of facial fat. This loss of volume can result in a face that appears sunken, tired and older. A facial fat transfer offers a natural solution by restoring lost volume using your own fat cells.

What To Expect

Because fat is a living tissue, it requires a fresh blood supply and nutrients to thrive after being transferred. Within two weeks, your body will naturally reabsorb any fat cells that didn’t survive the transter process. The remaining cells are alive and will regenerate, but they won’t immediately “plump up” as they haven’t yet begun storing new fat.

You may notice some initial deflation of the transferred fat within the first 1-3 months. This is a normal part of the process and is often referred to as the “low point”. However, around 6-9 months post procedure, these fat cells will start to re-inflate as they store more fat.

Optimal results are typically seen 1-2 years after the fat transfer, which is why we recommend waiting at least a year before considering any “touch-up” procedures. This approach helps us to avoid overfilling and ensures the most natural looking outcome.

Swelling and Bruising: Expect significant swelling and some bruising, usually peaking within 2-4 days and subsides over 1-2 weeks.

Your face may look dramatically different during the initial week. It’s common to have more swelling on one side than the other, as well as some hardnes or bumps. To minimize facial swelling, avoid bending over, looking down or lifting heavy objects.

Fat Transfer Process: Fat transfer is a gradual transformation. You will be at your lowest point of fat at 2 months but this gradual increase can take up to the year mark where your fat will peak.

Harvest Site: The area fat was harvested from, usually your thigh or stomach area, may be tender and potentially bruised. This will subside within 1-2 weeks post-surgery. There will be a small dissolvable suture that will subside in 1-2 weeks.

FAQ’s

How long will I be swollen?

Most swelling subsides within the first two weeks. You may experience some residual swelling for up to two months, but it should not be noticeable.

How does the doctor know how much fat to inject?

The amount of fat injected is based on the patient’s individual needs and desired outcome. Dr. Truesdale will err on the side of under-filling to ensure natural-looking results.

Is it normal for one side to be more swollen than the other?

Yes, asymmetrical swelling is common after surgery.

What are the lumps and hardness that appear under the skin?

These are a result of swelling and will diminish with time.

Why does it look like the fat is diminishing between 1-3 months after the transfer?

The fat is undergoing a process called neovascularization, where it establishes a new blood supply. During this time, the fat cells may deflate before re-inflating. Final results can be seen 6-12 months after the procedure.

Will there be stitches where the fat is injected?

No, there are no sutures used on the face. You may have small scabs that disappear within a few days.

Where is the fat harvested from?

The fat is typically harvested from the inner/outer thighs or the stomach.

Will the doctor freeze the fat for future touch-ups?

No, only the necessary amount of fat is harvested for the procedure. Frozen fat is not reliable for future use.

Will massaging help with the swelling?

No, massaging is not necessary and can be harmful.

Is it permanent? What happens if I need a touch-up?

Fat transfers are considered permanent. Touch-ups are rare but can be done after at least one year.

Should any other questions arise, please contact your Patient Care Coordinator.

GENERAL POST PROCEDURE CARE INSTRUCTIONS

If you received medication, IV sedation, or anesthesia, you’ll likely feel drowsy for the rest of the day. Don’t drive, sign legal papers, or use heavy machinery. We’ll escort you to your driver’s car in a wheelchair when you’re ready to leave.

Once home, have a light snack before taking any pain medication to reduce nausea. If you had general anesthesia, start with clear liquids and light snacks, then gradually move to a high-protein, low-sodium diet. This will help with healing and minimize swelling.

Post-Surgery Instructions

Rest: Keep your head and shoulders elevated with pillows for the first week. Place pillows under your arms to prevent rolling onto your side.

Icing: Use ice packs for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off for one week to reduce swelling and pain. Use a cloth barrier to protect your skin.

Pain: Take 2 Tylenol every 6 hours as needed, or use prescribed pain medication if Tylenol isn’t enough. Don’t take both at the same time.

Pain medication can cause constipation and nausea.

Constipation: Use an over-the-counter stool softener like Colace if needed.

Antibiotics: Take as directed until finished. Take with food to avoid stomach upset.

Driving: Resume driving after 2-3 days only if you feel alert and comfortable, are not taking narcotics, and your vision isn’t affected.

Activity: Light activity like walking is okay after 3-4 days. Avoid strenuous exercise for four weeks. Return to your normal routine after 3-4 weeks.

Head Elevation: Elevation is recommended for 2 weeks.

While serious complications are uncommon, it’s important to be aware of potential warning signs. If you experience any of the following symptoms, please contact our office or Dr. Truesdale immediately so we can assess and address the situation promptly.

Post-Operative Follow up Appointments

Reassurance during the healing process is important and we want you to feel comfortable voicing any questions or concerns that may arise during your surgical recovery.

In rare cases, there may be situations that require future intervention.

Post-surgical follow-up appointments are important in order to manage your recovery process and ensure optimal surgical results.

These appointments are intended to make sure healing is taking place appropriately and make sure all your questions and concerns are answered. If you skip your appointments and then come in with a concern, it is very possible that the ideal time to manage the issue could have been missed and the results may be compromised. • If you need to cancel a post-op appointment, it is extremely important that you let us know as soon as possible so that we can reschedule your appointment appropriately.

If you have any concerns please reach out to the office for guidance.

We are here for you.

Healing Process: Week One and Beyond

By the end of the first week, you’ll be well on your way to recovery.

Most people feel comfortable returning to work and social activities around two weeks after surgery. Remember, everyone heals at their own pace.

Swelling: It’s normal to have some swelling, unevenness, and tightness. These will gradually improve. By the one-month mark, you’ll see significant progress.

Bruising: Bruising usually fades within two weeks, changing color as it heals. In rare cases, it may take longer to disappear completely.

Cover-Up and Makeup: You can use breathable makeup to cover discoloration after one week, or after two weeks if you had a chemical peel or laser treatment.

Numbness: Numbness is common after procedures like a facelift and usually goes away within 3-6 months. Avoid extreme temperatures on the numb areas.

Exercise: Resume light exercise after three weeks and full exercise after four weeks. Listen to your body and avoid activities that cause discomfort.

Sexual Activity: As with exercise, wait four weeks before resuming sexual activity.

Lymphatic Massages: After 3-4 weeks you may begin lymphatic drainage. This will improve swelling.

Incision Healing

Incisions go through several phases. They may look bumpy at first, then become redder before gradually fading. This process can take up to a year.

Sunblock: Protect incisions from the sun with a daily full-spectrum sunscreen for the first year.

Scar Gel: Use silicone-based scar gel to minimize scarring for a minimum of 6 weeks.

Makeup: Use mineral-based makeup to cover incisions until redness subsides.

Skin Care: Resume your regular skin care routine after two weeks, or three weeks if you had laser resurfacing or a chemical peel.

Remember, healing takes time and patience. You’ll see continuous improvement in the weeks and months following your procedure.

MAINTAINING YOUR RESULTS

Maintaining your results is important. While your procedure will significantly turn back the clock, the results aren’t permanent, because aging is ongoing. There are several key things you can do to preserve your results and keep your appearance looking its best.

Changes to your facial structure and volume will continue to gradually age, but your skin requires consistent upkeep to continue looking its best. Therefore, post-procedure care focuses on keeping your skin healthy and youthful. This requires regular maintenance, similar to how you take care of your overall health, your home, or your garden.

Collagen Stimulation for Prevention and Maintenance

Collagen/Elastin production decreases with age, leading to skin thinning, wrinkles, and sagging. Stimulating collagen production is essential for long-term anti-aging. This can be achieved through active skin care with growth factors, in addition to microneedling, lasers, chemical peels, and medical grade skin care. Consistent use of these products and treatments will improve your skin year after year.

Maintaining good skin integrity is crucial for extending the results of your facial rejuvenation procedure. Please let us know if you need skincare recommendations.

Botox and Injectable Fillers

Repetitive facial movements and thinning skin create lines and wrinkles on your upper face. Static wrinkles are present even when your face is at rest. Botox, administered every 3-4 months, can slow wrinkle formation and even prevent it. Some wrinkles may require fillers to achieve a smooth, youthful appearance. Many fillers last several months and produce excellent results.

Red Light Therapy

Using a red light therapy mask can be a valuable addition to your post-operative healing process. Red light therapy has been shown to help reduce inflammation, which can minimize swelling and discomfort after surgery. It can also stimulate collagen production, which is essential for skin repair and can aid in scar healing.

Additionally, it may promote better circulation, helping to deliver nutrients and oxygen to the treated area and further supporting the healing process. Always consult with our office before starting any new treatment to ensure it aligns with your specific recovery plan.

DR. TRUESDALE REVISION POLICY

It’s important to keep in mind that each patient is unique, with individual bone structure, build, and other traits that can affect results. While cosmetic surgery can achieve a lot, it does have limitations.

Your safety and satisfaction are our top priorities. Dr. Truesdale is dedicated to providing the best possible surgical outcome. While a specific result can’t be guaranteed, he aims for your satisfaction. It’s important to understand that an unsatisfactory outcome isn’t necessarily anyone’s fault, as complications can occasionally occur that are beyond the surgeon’s control (like hypertrophic or keloid scarring, prolonged swelling, infections, or severe bruising).

While most patients experience a smooth recovery and excellent results, sometimes a touch-up or revision procedure is needed. Doctor Truesdale recommends waiting 12 months or longer before revision surgery, as significant healing and changes occur within the first year.

This timeframe may vary depending on the surgery, and other doctors may have different guidelines.

If you and Dr. Truesdale agree that a revision is needed within the first year, Dr. Truesdale may waive some or all of the surgeon’s fee, but you will be responsible for operating room and anesthesia costs.

FINANCING

For your convenience, Truesdale Facial Plastic Surgery offers several excellent third-party financing options to help make your surgical journey more accessible. We partner with reputable financial institutions such as PatientFi, Alphaeon, LendingUSA, and CareCredit to provide flexible payment plans, including options with 0% interest for qualified applicants.
